Through the prophet Isaiah we learn that God intended for His people to be a source of His shining light in the world so that the people of every nation would see their light and be drawn to Him. Yet, it was the darkness of their sin that kept this light from truly shining as God intended. So, through Isaiah, God also promised a servant who would be the light Israel could not be. This servant is Jesus Christ whose birth we anticipate and prepare to celebrate this Advent season.

In our anticipation and preparation of this season, we will be journeying back to the time of Isaiah to consider what it means to be the light that God calls us to be. In this series, “A Light For All People”, we will seek to learn how Christ is the source of true light and how in Him we are called to be witnesses to His light.

The table is a central part of our lives. It is where our bodies are nourished with food and our spirits with the fellowship of friends and family. It is where school projects get done and family game night happens. It is where we catch-up with friends and make new ones. We experience all of life at our tables.

The same is true for the table in our sanctuary, the Lord's Table. This is the table we gather at to experience the gifts of God as the people of God. It is at this table that Christ meets us and nourishes us. It is at this table that the Gospel story is remembered, revealed, and rehearsed.

Perhaps for some the topic of politics makes you anxious, or angry, or annoyed, or ambivalent, or maybe all of the above, but this morning, we are going to explore a better way to engage the topic of politics as a follower of Christ.

Jesus gets political in this morning's passage though it is not in a way that we are accustomed to in our world, nor is it in a way that fits into any of the prominent political agendas of our world. Jesus doesn't side with one way or the other but shows a better way to engage politics. This way is the way of Jesus and through it we see that even the way we engage politics is to be formed by our love for God and our neighbor.

We are living in an increasingly connected world. We are connected with others like never before. Social media connects us with friends and people all over the world. We can talk face to face with people without being in the same room or even time zone as them. Yet, despite all that connects us, people are struggling with loneliness like never before. Which is why we at Immanuel are committed to living Neighbors First. Neighbors First is not a slogan to grow our church, but a change in perspective to help us see and serve the needs of our neighbors first, ahead of ourselves. We have an opportunity to imitate Christ to our neighbors by being intentional to be both aware of and present to our neighbors. So, for 6 weeks in this series "You Are My Neighbor" we will look at 6 commitments of living Neighbors First with the goal of serving and connecting with the needs of our neighbors.

CROP Hunger Walk:  Why do we walk?  We walk to partner with and support 1,600 local food banks and soup kitchens, gathering in solidarity with others in our own community to help end hunger and poverty.  We also show solidarity with the millions who walk miles every day in search of food and water.  Please mark your calendars, Immanuel will be walking on Sunday, October 9 right after the morning service.  CWS Crop will also be our October Mission of the Month.

We will be using a 5-week video series called Grace/Truth from The Center for Faith, Sexuality, and Gender led by Preston Sprinkle. This will be an opportunity aimed at discussing and dialoguing in a way that welcomes many differing viewpoints. There will be two opportunities to engage in this discussion: Monday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 p.m. (October 10th-November 7th), or Wednesday nights from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. (October 12th-November 16th.)

The Christian life is not about a list of do’s and don’ts, but is about God working in our hearts, by His Spirit, to bring us to faith in Jesus Christ. As we continue to live out our faith, God continues to work in our hearts by His Spirit to produce Christlikeness, or the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

Today as we look at Galatians 5: 22-26, we will focus on putting to death the desires of our flesh and pursuing the fruit of the Spirit’s work in our hearts.

Today as we look at Proverbs 14:14, we will see that what we do and how we treat others reveals what is in our hearts. If we withhold goodness from others, we cannot claim to know the goodness of God.
