The Christian life is not about a list of do’s and don’ts, but is about God working in our hearts, by His Spirit, to bring us to faith in Jesus Christ. As we continue to live out our faith, God continues to work in our hearts by His Spirit to produce Christ-likeness, or the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

Today as we look at Galatians 5:22-23, and Proverbs 4:13-18, we will see that the Christian life is to be marked primarily by the presence and pursuit of peace.  We will also see that by His Spirit, God makes us peaceable people.

Today as we look at Gal. 5:22 and John 15:9-17, we will see that the risk of preaching on joy is offering false expectations - as soon as I decide to follow Jesus all of my problems will disappear. The trouble is that we often experience some intensely wonderful moments, but eventually these wear off, and we wonder what is wrong. We may then walk away from our faith, or we may react critically toward others who we hold responsible for our pain.

To experience the Joy that Paul talks about, we must walk in the Spirit. This is risky, uncomfortable, and hard, but it produces deep satisfying joy! Can we shatter the myths and come to a deeper understanding of this subject? Only if we tell the truth about the spiritual journey!

Dear Lord,

We lift these graduates up to You and ask for Your mighty blessings to rain down upon them. Show these young adults success in life and allow them to be respected and appreciated in all that they do. Please allow them to feel the joy of accomplishment after hard work, but also keep them focused on knowing that You are the reason for all successes in life. Please give them courage, unbending faith, strong values, and a generous heart. Please also keep their Christian foundation a part of all decisions made and bless them with bountiful opportunities. We ask these things in Jesus’s name.

The resurrection informs our mission as a church, giving us a message to share in word and in deed.

Today as we look at John 20:21, we will see that just as Jesus was sent by the Father into the world, Jesus sends His followers, and as followers of Christ, our mindset must be that we incarnate (give flesh to) the mission of God through the Spirit.

All change serves the purpose of the church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Today as we look at Colossians 1:21-29, we will see that we may not agree on the what or how, but we must all agree on the why.

When we agree on the why, we see that the how and the what serves not our agenda, but the mission of the church.

The resurrection shows us that change is natural because through it we become new creations, and when we consider creation around us, we see that it is natural for healthy life to grow, and in order to grow, change is necessary.

This morning we will be looking at 2 Corinthians 5:14-21, to see that if we want to grow, we must be willing to see change as a natural condition for growth. Nothing can stay the same and grow.

This morning we will be looking at Romans 6:4 to see that the resurrection is a necessary part of our new life in Christ.New life doesn’t just happen out of thin air. New life comes through the resurrection which is a process of the old dying away and the new being raised.

April 14, 2022 Maundy Thursday

Tonight, as we hear from God's Word and celebrate Communion together we are reminded of how our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ humbled Himself to serve us and save us on the cross. As the Apostle Paul tells us of Christ in Philippians 2:7-8, "He made Himself nothing," and became obedient to the point of death on the cross.

On this Thursday night before the cross, traditionally called Maundy Thursday, we reflect on what Christ has done for us and how He calls us to witness to the good news of His redeeming work

Mark 14:12-52 NIV

The Last Supper

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished, and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city, and found things just as Jesus had told them. So, they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you; I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

 Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

 Gethsemane

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

We continue our series through the Gospel of Mark with the focus that as we discover more about Jesus, we discover more about the life that He calls us to live.  Today in the story of

Mark 3:1-6, we see how Jesus rescues us from the selfishness of sin to live a better story in Him.

“Greetings from all of us at Immanuel”

As we continue our series through the Gospel of Mark, we do so with the focus that as we discover more about Jesus, we discover more about the life that He calls us to live. Today we see Jesus Christ call someone unexpected to be His disciple, a tax collector named Levi. This morning in Mark 2:13-17 we see the scandalous grace of Jesus Christ at work in the unexpected to change the lives of those in need of His grace.
